Doug Doty started out his college career first wanting to be a nuclear physicist, later a piano player, and later still maybe even a minister. That was until he took his first bookkeeping class in college. On the third day of Bookkeeping 101 he know he had found “it” – right there and then, Doug began to pursue a career in accounting and has been passionate about it ever since.
Doug was born and raised in Idaho where his father worked in construction and his mother worked for the Idaho State School System. As soon as he could, Doug began working, first on a paper route and then on a farm for family friends. He began to understand how the agricultural and construction industries worked, knowledge that would serve him well later.
Doug attended Western Baptist Bible College, now Corban University, and later Portland State University. He entered the field of public accounting in 1972. He worked with a large accounting firm for almost 10 years and gained valuable experience. Doug found he had a knack for counseling clients on tax strategies and teaching them to understand their own financial challenges and opportunities. Feeling he could offer clients more time and attention in his own firm, he started Douglas W. Doty, CPA, PC, with a staff consisting of one bookkeeper and himself at an office on Market Street in Salem, Oregon. In 1999 the Company moved to 1515 Liberty Street SE. Shortly after the merger with Tyson Pruett, in December 2014, Doty Pruett Wilson moved to its new home at 447 State Street in downtown.
In addition to his work as a CPA, Doug began his real estate investing “side career” in 1999 and became captivated with the advantages he discovered in owning real estate versus leasing from others. Being mathematically inclined, Doug understood the dynamic power of “leverage” related to owning “income producing” real property (third party rentals). In fact, Doug and his wife, Gayle Caldarazzo-Doty, purchased and restored two buildings in Salem’s historic downtown. This project was the catalyst that turned Doug’s attention to real estate as a vocation.
Upon Doug’s semi-retirement from the CPA work in early 2019, he decided to take what he had learned about real estate to his friends and neighbors in the Salem community. He has joined up with SMI Commercial Real Estate, LLC and is looking forward to serving as a real estate advisor for many years to come.
Living a life that is true to one’s faith and highest ideals is important to Doug and his family. Doug has four children and six grandchildren that are the light of his life. He and his wife Gayle Caldarazzo-Doty enjoy travelling, especially to see family and friends, and plan to travel to Europe as often as they can. Doug has a special interest in history, especially the U.S. Revolutionary War. Not surprisingly, based on his early college majors, he still “tickles the ivories,” occasionally playing piano at church or at his Rotary Club. And, while not a minister, Doug is a popular speaker on a variety of professional topics around the community and strives to serve God in all he endeavors.

Gabe Johansen began his professional career at the age of 14, washing cars at his family’s new car dealership. He worked his way from a floor salesperson to become the General Manager leading a staff of more than 50 employees that produced in excess of $25MM retail sales every year. When Gabe’s father became ill, it was apparent that the family dealership had to be sold. He negotiated the complicated sale of the family business in what turned out to be his introduction to high level brokerage.
